Sage Kitchen: Seasonal Goodness & Lifestyle

Sage Kitchen’s five week old cafe on Bowery in the east village, NYC, is an airy oasis of natural light and wholesome ingredients. When the Sage Kitchen team added fast-casual dining and a highly curated lifestyle marketplace to their catering and pop-up events, seasonal eaters and kosher* keepers had plenty of reason to celebrate.

The dynamic trio of co-founders, Executive Chef Jasmine Einahori, Matthew Glick and Zachary Novetsky, brings a range of talents to their first eat-in space, adding a unique and hip spot to NYC’s kosher dining scene.

As I perused the tempting selections from their bright and immaculate service counter, I was relieved to see that a trio of salads was available. Choosing was nearly impossible with so many crisp greens, bright vegetables and tempting grain salads to choose from.

Freekah salad with roasted squash, toasted pecans, apples and arugula and the signature schnitzel sandwich with house made apricot-fig jam, pickled onions and aioli are among their most frequently ordered dishes. Finally, cafe patrons and take-out customers can enjoy the same fresh flavors that lunch delivery clients have been ordering from catering for the last few years.

In a kosher cafe that serves half and full size portions of moist slices of roast chicken and full size portions of baked salmon (also available in their takeout cases), I opted for the smaller portion of chicken. I was rewarded with gently seasoned and tender white meat that allows the more boldly flavored salads to shine.

Summer salads and sandwiches are enticing with seasonal specials. Snap pea salad with pickled carrots, grilled baby zucchini salad with roasted artichoke hearts, heirloom tomato sandwiches with avocado creme, and house- made pita are luring me right back to the cafe at first chance I can find.

Dairy free dessert selections include individual olive oil cakes infused with orange and bourbon, salted tahini chocolate chip cookies, and banana walnut bread.

In short, leave room for dessert and forget your diet.

Chef Jazzie grew up in LA with her Israeli mother and Persian father. Middle Eastern influences shine in her combination of ingredients and seasonings. Eggplant sandwiches with mango relish, tahini and slow cooked eggs reflects her creative spin on sabich, while citrus  brightens salads and grain compositions.

The Marketplace at Sage Kitchen features a curated selection of the Sage team’s favorite specialty items.  All grocery items are made in-house and many are for sale in the refrigerated cases up front. Some will rotate seasonally (pickled ramps really got my attention on their instagram feed) while hummus, preserved lemons, granola in 3 flavors, spiced nut blends will be regularly available.

Did you fall in love with silverware and dishes you admired while dining in? You can buy the ceramic dinnerware and utensils in The Marketplace at Sage Kitchen. Chef Jazzie’s favorite kitchen tools, unique vintage decor items and fresh flowers are also available by the stem or arranged.
